Last Thursday and Friday, over 18,500 people stood in long lines at the Curbside Cookoff in order to get a taste from D.C.’s favorite food vendors. At that time, they were asked to text in votes for the vendor they felt deserving of the first-ever 2010 Curbside Cookoff Curby Award. The lucky winner? Curbside Cupcakes. The runners-up were (in order): Red Hook Lobster Truck, BBQ Bandidos, District Taco and Pleasant Pops.

During the initial voting, there were accusations of ballot stuffing. And to no one’s surprise, the voting system was hacked on Friday at around 6 p.m. Votes were limited to 16 per unique phone number, but according to Michael Rupert of the District Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs who helped organize the event, officials realized that around 8,000 votes were coming in from only seven phone numbers. As a result, they shut down the live leader board, but continued to accept votes.

Once all the data was compiled, organizers performed three different analyses: one vote per unique phone number (1,221 total votes), 16 vote maximum inclusive per phone number (4,750), and hacked votes (30,057). In all three counts, Curbside Cupcakes came out on top. The top five list posted on DCRA’s site are the results of the 16 vote per phone number maximum; only the fifth spot differs from the unique phone number analysis, which places the Fojol Brothers in fifth place instead of Pleasant Pops.

But as Rupert notes, this was just for fun and to build up some excitement around the event. So we should loosen up and just take the award for what it is…something fun.
