Good morning, Washington. Larry Hutchins, the Department of Public Works employee who was shot and killed at a DPW facility last week, will be laid to rest today. (Remember, no trash or recycling pickup today.) Depressingly, WAMU reports that the city knew, months ago, that the facility where Hutchins was killed had several serious security flaws. According to a report released last spring, the facility’s security cameras and fence were in need of upgrades and, perhaps most disturbingly, one of the security gates was “essentially unmanned for most of the day.” DPW claims that they were not aware of the security assessment until after the shooting.

Can Anyone Serve On This Jury?: Those of us in the know have been following Sarah Larimer of TBD as she’s been live-tweeting from jury selection in the Chandra Levy murder trial at D.C. Superior Court. Larimer’s tweeting has been part blueprint for those who are looking for good excuses to get out of jury duty and part realization that there aren’t many people who consider themselves unbiased about this particular case. If you don’t feel like flipping through dozens of tweets, Keith Alexander of the Post has a tidy recap of the difficult jury selection — Judge Gerald Fisher says that he hopes to have a list of 40 prospective jurors finished by today.

ABRA Investigation Into DC9 Death Doesn’t Clear Up Much: Rend Smith gets his hands on a report produced by the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration about what happened outside DC9 last Friday. ABRA looks into such incidents as part of its due diligence for liquor licensing. The report doesn’t clear much up, though: ABRA Investigator Erin Mathieson “was able to determine that one of the owners, Bill Spieler, and four staff members then chased the man up the road where he was subsequently tackled and beaten until he was in an unresponsive state,” but didn’t conclude that the men “murdered” Ali Ahmed Mohammed.

His Name? Chuck Norris: How about this piece of news: while investigating a three-car accident last night around 7:30 p.m., a Maryland State trooper was hit by a car on the outer loop of the Beltway. The trooper reportedly rolled off the hood of the offending car, got in his cruiser and then chased the vehicle down. The trooper was eventually treated for minor injuries to his arm.
