Photo by LaTur.Good morning, Washington. It’s shaping up to be a beautiful fall Saturday, though a little chilly early. There are plenty of festivals and events to check out outside today: for those who want to drink, there is the Nova BrewFest in Centreville, for the nerdy, there is the Science and Engineering Festival on the Mall, and for those interested in music, there is the Zest Fest in NoMA. If you want to stay inside and learn about saving the environment, there is the Green Festival at the Washington Convention Center.
And let me introduce myself, my name is Catherine (you might have read my blog) and I’ll be one of your weekend editors. I’m excited to be here and write about news, the arts, food, and whatever is going on that’s fun over the weekend. If you have any tips or something you want me to write about, drop me a line at catherine@dcist.com.
>> It’s the weekend, so no surprise that there are Metro delays. Bad news for those trying to use the Red line: riders should add 30 minutes to their travel time between Shady Grove and Twinbrook stations and 20 minutes between the New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U and Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood stations. Green line riders should add 20 minutes to their travel time between L’Enfant Plaza and Navy Yard stations. Interestingly, some of this work is to help expand cell phone coverage in the Metro system.
>> There was a pretty catastrophic fire at a historic Alexandria Seminary last night. There were no injuries reported nor any cause of the start of the fire.
>> Weekend also means road closures! Between Silver Spring zombie walks (Saturday night) and the Army 10 miler (Sunday morning), WTOP has all the details of what areas you should avoid if you’re traveling by car.
