Häxan—Witchcraft through the Ages (directed by Benjamin Christensen)Once more we lead off with concerts that will cost you nothing but time; this week proving again that some of the best concerts to be heard in Washington are…
FREE:
>> The Freer Gallery of Art hosts a series of concerts by musicians from Vermont’s prestigious Marlboro Music festival. The first of these concerts is on Tuesday night (October 26, 7:30 p.m.), featuring pieces for various combinations of clarinet, French horn, harp, double-bass, mezzo-soprano, and string quartet. The music is by Dvořák, Respighi, Mozart, and Marlboro’s 2009 composer-in-residence, Robert Cuckson. You can be sure of having a seat by reserving through Ticketmaster for a modest fee, or show up early to receive an unused ticket.
>> Enjoy some lunchtime music on Wednesday (October 27, 12:10 p.m.) with a free concert by the Fauré Piano Quartet at the National Gallery of Art (in the lecture hall on the ground floor of the museum’s West Building), playing music by Fauré and other composers.
>> Also, on Sunday (October 31, 6:30 p.m.) the National Gallery of Art Orchestra will play a Halloween program in the East Concourse auditorium. This program is presented in conjunction with an earlier screening (October 31, 4 p.m.) of Häxan—Witchcraft through the Ages, Benjamin Christensen’s 1922 short film, performed for the first time in the United States with its original score. No ticket or reservation is required for concerts at the National Gallery of Art.
