UPDATE: Both WTOP and the Post report that the individual hit was a man who placed himself on the tracks intentionally. The man has been removed, but reportedly suffered severe trauma and has been taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Another man, a Metro worker who assisted the man, also suffered minor injuries. Metro Center is beginning to reopen to customers, but Red Line service is still split into two sections. An individual was struck by a Metrorail train at Metro Center shortly after 7:45 p.m. this evening. The person is still alive and is communicating with emergency authorities as they attempt to extricate him or her; it is not yet clear how the person ended up on the tracks before being struck. Flickr user curiouslee provides this amazing shot of the rescue effort. The train which hit the person was reportedly heading in the direction of Glenmont. Red Line trains are now turning back at both Dupont Circle and Judiciary Square and there are major delays in both directions on the Red Line. Both the Blue and Orange Lines are still running through Metro Center; shuttle bus service around the affected area is being established.
