Fulton Lights

Andrew Spencer Goldman, the man behind Fulton Lights, has a long-standing relationship with the District, despite never really setting his roots anywhere. During his absence from the District, he started recording Fulton Lights records, and his sprawling, textured works gained critical acclaim from everyone, locally and nationally. However, for his newest EP, simply titled 3 Songs, he picks up the tempo before applying the reverb. The EP adds a distinctly folky flavor that was not necessarily visible on any of Goldman’s previous work. When Goldman sings, “we take the bus / we take the train / we go by car / we go by plane,” on “Staring Out the Window,” it’s just more movement in a song already set in motion by the quick drum beats and guitar strumming. Goldman had some help from friends like John Davis and TJ Lipple, but while their stamps enhance the work, 3 Songs is clearly a work of and by Goldman and his continuing leaps as a creative force.

Goldman, who now lives in Baltimore, talked to DCist about leaving New York, traveling the globe and contributing to an Australian literary publication.

Sounds like I caught you working. Are you working on songwriting or another job?

I wish I was doing songwriting. I’m in law school so I’m doing homework. It keeps me extra busy.
