Yesterday, four members of the Washington Capitals — forwards Nicklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson, and defensemen Karl Alzner and John Carlson — took a break from their usual weekend routine to get back to basics on the National Mall. The four traveled from the team’s Kettler Capitals Iceplex practice facility to the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink to take part in the pond’s Community Day festivities — the four took a few spins around the rink with about 200 people. DCist staff photographer Kevin Carroll tagged along with the Caps as they laced up, donned the sweaters and hit the ice.
