>> Duke Ellington’s adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite is nothing short of a jazz classic. Trombonist Eric Felten assembles a big band of fine local talent every year to perform the piece, and will do so tonight at Blues Alley. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $25 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.

>> Jane Monheit‘s recording career has now spanned 10 years, and she celebrated that milestone with the her September release, Home. The talented vocalist will bring her classic style to The Birchmere tonight for a 7:30 p.m. show. $35 + fees.

>> The University of Maryland jazz program, under the direction of saxophonist Chris Vadala, hosts its annual Winter Big Band Showcase tonight at the Clarice Smith Center for the Performing Arts. 7:30 p.m. $9-$27. Vadala will also give a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher performance on Friday at the same venue. 4 p.m. Free.

>> Guitarist David Lighton is a native of New York, but moved to D.C. in 2009 for graduate school and to write for All About Jazz. He’ll perform 8 and 10 p.m. sets tonight at Twins Jazz. $10 + $10 food/drink minimum.

>> At just 26 years old, pianist Gerald Clayton has already played with many of the top names in jazz, and has garnered numerous critics awards in the process. Catch him leading his trio in an intimate setting on Thursday at the Mansion at Strathmore. Tickets to the 7:30 p.m. show are $28.

>> Up-and-coming local pianist/vocalist Alice Laurissa performs 8 and 10 p.m. sets on Thursday at Twins Jazz. $10 + $10 food/drink minimum.

>> Heturu is the latest addition to D.C.’s afrobeat scene, which now includes a handful of regularly gigging bands. They will perfom on Thursday at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge. 10 p.m. Call 202-667-0088 for cover information.

>> DCist was on hand to help celebrate NEA Jazz Master Benny Golson‘s 80th birthday last year at the Kennedy Center. The legendary saxophonist returns to the District this weekend, where he will perform in the historic and intimate club setting of Bohemian Caverns.
