‘Twas the week before Christmas, and nothing is stirring in the concert hall. Check out our roundup of Christmas concerts for what is left this week. There are a few options for New Year’s concerts and the first week of January noted below — with that, the Classical Music Agenda will go on a much-deserved hiatus for a couple weeks. Happy New Year!
CHAMPAGNE MUSIC:
>> A ticket to the annual New Year’s Eve concert at the Kennedy Center (December 31, 8:30 p.m.) gets you into the party in the Grand Foyer, with dancing until 1 a.m. I have not been to one of these concerts myself, but the music is the light fare of musicals and classical pops you would expect, performed by members of the National Symphony Orchestra. Tickets: $50 to $95.
>> The Strauss Symphony of America presents a Viennese-style New Year’s Day Concert (January 1, 2 p.m.), with dancers and singers, in the Music Center at Strathmore. Tickets: $49 to $95.
BACK TO NORMAL:
>> On the following day (January 2, 6:30 p.m.), the National Gallery of Art kicks off a six-concert series featuring a complete cycle of Beethoven’s string quartets with the American String Quartet. Just a reminder: this concert series is free and does not require any ticket or reservation.
>> The Folger Consort performs its annual New Year concert (January 7 and 8) at Washington National Cathedral. The theme this year is music descriptive of the four seasons, including pieces by Vivaldi, Christopher Simpson and modern composer John Cage. Tickets: $30 to $50. Considering the sometimes cavernous acoustic of the venue, we recommend sitting as close as possible.
