Photo by rockcreek.UPDATE (4:21 p.m.):The U.S. Attorney’s Office has released a statement regarding the medical examiner’s report, stating that they “intend to carefully study these conclusions as part of our legal analysis of this tragic incident.”
The Medical Examiner has now completed an autopsy related to the unfortunate death of Ali Ahmed Mohammed. The Medical Examiner’s forensics examination has concluded that a variety of factors led to the death of Mr. Mohammed, and we intend to carefully study these conclusions as part of our legal analysis of this tragic incident. Our deliberate and comprehensive factual inquiry continues, and we again express our sincere appreciation to the family of Mr. Mohammed for their patience and understanding as we work to reach a just conclusion to our investigation.
UPDATE (3:54 p.m.): The cause of Mohammed’s death, according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, was “Excited Delirium Associated With Arrhythmogenic Cardiac Anomalies, Alcohol Intoxication and Physical Exertion With Restraint.” Obviously, I haven’t the slightest idea what that means — but a quick Google search and some semantic analysis indicates that it might mean that Mohammed had a preexisting condition which was triggered by some kind of physical activity. Again, that’s just a simple attempt from a layman; here’s hoping there will be some kind of explanation from OCME as the days and weeks go on.
TBD reports this afternoon that a source with the Ethiopian-American Cultural Center tells them that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has ruled the October 15 death of Ali Ahmed Mohammed outside DC9 a homicide. Andrew Laurence, a community organizer who has organized several protests regarding Mohammed’s death, has told Sommer Mathis that Mohammed’s parents retrieved the death certificate from the Department of Heath’s Office of Vital Records this morning. The release of that form had been delayed for several days due to an office closure and other logistical hurdles.
As of this posting, the OCME has still not officially verified that Mohammed’s family has gotten the death certificate, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office has not yet made a statement. The bar, which had been closed for two months while the investigation into why Mohammed died was ongoing, reopened for business on Friday night.
DCist has received the following statement from Mohammed family attorney Billy Martin via email:
This morning, the family of Ali Ahmed Mohammed received the death certificate based upon the autopsy performed by the D.C. Medical Examiner’s office. The death certificate confirms that Ali’s death was a homicide. The family wishes to commend those at the Medical Examiner¹s office for their hard work and dedication in helping to uncover that Ali¹s death was a homicide. The family is confident that law enforcement will continue its investigation into Ali’s tragic death and that the Medical Examiner¹s report is a step toward justice for Ali. The Medical Examiner’s findings, however, also reminds us that Ali suffered a cruel and senseless death. Ali did not deserve to die for allegedly breaking a window. The family remains heartbroken and cannot have peace until those responsible for Ali’s death are brought to justice.
Obviously, we’ll have more on this story as things develop.
