Photo by lorigoldberg.Good morning, Washington — and happy New Year’s Eve! Metro will be open until 3 a.m. tonight to accommodate all you revelers — and don’t forget that SoberRide is available for those of you whose New Year’s celebration involves getting behind the wheel. Nearly everything is closed today, including city and federal offices, schools, courts and libraries. But there is one kind of operation which doesn’t shut down for New Year’s — or at any other holiday for that matter: D.C.’s local charities. We know that there are probably some of you who want to spread the wealth before the clock strikes midnight on the 2009 tax year. Not sure where to direct your giving locally? You can’t go wrong with SOME, Street Sense, Martha’s Table, Miriam’s Kitchen, Bread for the City, House of Ruth, Calvary Women’s Services or WEAVE. Feel free to recommend other worthy options in the comments.wa
Wave Bye-Bye To The TSA?: Derek Kravitz reports that the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, who oversees operations at Reagan National and Dulles International airports, is considering ditching the Transportation Security Administration and hiring a private firm to handle its security. Sixteen airports across the country have told the TSA to get lost since 2002, discouraged with the governmental bureaucracy which the TSA brings; the recent flare-up over pat downs potentially discouraging people from flying also encouraged the MWAA to look into a potential swap.
Fire on Kenyon Street NW: A fire broke out inside a three-story rowhouse at 1344 Kenyon Street NW last night. According to D.C. Fire and EMS, the fire, which broke through the roof of the home and caused “moderate” damage, might have stemmed from some renovation work at the property. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames relatively quickly, and there were no injuries reported. A few surrounding streets were briefly closed while fire personnel knocked down and investigated the blaze.
