Photo by yonas1.Good morning, Washington. Yes, snow. About an inch or so of the stuff hit the ground in Washington last night, the snow bubble (or “force field,” if you prefer) protecting us yet again from a storm that’s looking to smother the northeast United States. Most local school districts went with a two-hour delay this morning, but the District’s opened on time. The only real issue this morning is icy sidewalks and roads, and not so much the accumulation of snow. Forecasts show that cold air and gusty wind might find the slickness sticking around for longer than usual. Since there was snow in 49 states yesterday, traveling via air and train could also be a struggle today.
Did those of you with a sidewalk to tend to break out the shovel this morning? Now’s as good a time as ever to remind you that if you don’t in the future, and Councilmember Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3) gets her way, you’ll be looking at a $25 ticket.
Man Killed In P.G. County While Breaking Into Home: Yet another person was killed in Prince George’s County last night, though police are saying that this latest incident was justifiable. A man attempted to break into a home on 7400 block of Riverdale Road in the New Carrolton area around 8 p.m., when someone inside the house opened fire, hitting the intruder. No arrests have been made, but regardless, it is still categorized as the county’s 12th homicide in the year’s first 11 days. According to a report in the Post, County authorities remain baffled about the spike in killings, because they appear to be isolated crimes and “there’s no common set of circumstances that [they] can go after.”
Former Park Police Chief To Be Reinstated: Teresa Chambers was fired from her job as Chief of the U.S. Park Police in December 2003, after telling the Washington Post that there weren’t enough officers patrolling the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. (How dare she!) Yesterday, a federal arbitrator ordered that Chambers be reinstated to the position within 20 days, putting an end to a nearly eight-year legal battle. Chambers, who is also eligible to receive back pay dating back to July 2004, is currently the chief of police in Riverdale, Maryland; it is expected that current Park Police chief Salvatore Lauro will step down to make room for Chambers to return.

This Day in DCist: Last year, police told us that carrying more than one condom in a “prostitution free zone” wasn’t probable cause for arrest; in 2009, rentals during the Inauguration were spare, as Springsteen was confirmed and a rehearsal took place.
