Country pate and Allan Benton’s ham.

Restaurant Week is almost upon us, but you can get a jump start on breaking all those New Year’s resolutions at Againn. The downtown gastropub started offering their Restaurant Week menu on Monday and will continue through January 26. DCist tried it out last night, and we’re happy to report that we waddled out of the restaurant satisfied with the rather generous menu and well-executed pub-style fare.

One of the hallmarks of a good Restaurant Week deal is the menu size. Againn performs pretty well in this regard, offering about half their regular entrees and a selection of appetizers and charcuterie on the menu. Depending on what you order, the $35.11 deal is about equivalent to getting a free dessert or starter.

Two different charcuterie boards are available, including a rustic pate and 14 month-aged Allan Benton ham. The thin slices of ham have the intensely salty, game-y flavor reminiscent of good prosciutto. Piled on crusty bread with a smear of creamy sheep’s milk ricotta, this dish is rich enough to be meal on its own. The pate was a more manageable portion, and a side of sweet, tangy pickled mustard seeds provided a textural counterpoint to the soft, earthiness of the meat.
