Photo by argonautdcWith a name as gruff-sounding as the “Argonaut,” there’s no surprise that the Atlas District bar and eatery can tough it out through a devastating fire to reopen its doors tonight at 5 p.m. After all, the bar is named after the Argo. A ship. That sails on an ocean. With water everywhere …
Oxymoronic situation aside, it’s only fitting that it takes a bar named for a band of Greek warriors to persist through all the tribulations over the past seven months. Despite the bad luck, owners Scott Magnuson and Shaaren Pine have been very vocal about their appreciation for all the support from the community, particularly the $10,000 in donations and backing for a temporary tavern license to continue operating the undamaged upstairs bar.
The Argonaut’s website lists a few of the bar’s changes, including: a completely new floor plan, an expanded food menu and antique draught towers. In addition, the uniquely large space will feature an expanded exterior patio, as well as an indoor/outdoor bar — standing room only until final permits are secured for seating.
Other than the new grey exterior, much of the bar’s vibe will remain the same. In fact, whether done out of nostalgia or necessity, several pieces of the fire and water-damaged wood have been re-used in the redone window fixtures. Likewise, tonight’s re-opening will be a low-key event, perfect for snacking on a Steamer Basket while appreciating the bar’s new facade.
