Going into last night’s contest, the Wizards had dropped 19 consecutive road games, and I knew that their 20th chance to break that streak would be intriguing. Either they would finally get off the proverbial schneid and get that first road win, or they would sink even deeper into the abyss of losses. I’m a journalist, so I’m supposed to be objective; but as a Wizards fan, I was hoping for a victory.
Prior to last night’s game, there was every reason to be encouraged that the 19-game losing streak would end. On Monday night at the Verizon Center, the Wizards defeated the Utah Jazz, to win consecutive games for the first time all year. That game was particularly gratifying because major contributions came from Washington’s star players.
That night, John Wall controlled the tempo with 19 points and 15 assists, Nick Young scored 25 points (20 in the second half) and Andray Blatche had 21 points and 11 rebounds. When you combine that team effort with the fact that the Utah Jazz are arguably one of the 10 best teams in the league, the Wizards had to be feeling encouraged as they headed on the road.
