Photo by dcJohn.Does Rockville need a motto? Well, according to according to a report in the Rockville Patch, it’s got one now: “Get Into It.” Uh, okay. Better than “(Don’t Go Back To) Rockville,” I guess.
The Patch has the riveting report from Tuesday night’s city council meeting:
Comments in favor of the approved tagline said, “this is dynamic, this is young, this is hip,” Britton said. “Those are the businesses we’re trying to attract.”
But Councilwoman Bridget Donnell Newton looked at the vote totals.
“Out of a city of 62,000 people, we had 204 responses, which doesn’t say much for people’s energy that this stirred,” Newton said. “The second thing that I want to point out is 61 people voted for ‘The World Class City That Feels Like Home,’ but 60 people said ‘No Choice.’ So I don’t think there’s an overwhelming sentiment towards doing this.”
You know, I think Newton really might be on to something with her assertion that no one really gives a damn.
But seeing as how the city is spending $75,000 on the slogan’s development, I suppose I can admit that “Get Into It” is the least ridiculous — relatively speaking — of the three options the city could have selected, as “Find The Good Life In a Great City” or “The World Class City That Feels Like Home” are, let’s be honest, downright laughable. (No offense to anyone from or who lives in Rockville, but a “World Class” city? Uh, try again.) TBD, who lent the story a wider audience this afternoon, tries to stay positive, asking readers which of the three, if any, they would have chosen.
70 percent, so far, have gone with “none of them.”
And why wouldn’t they? If less than half of one percent of the people who actually live in the city put forth the effort to vote on a slogan, it’s probably a good indication that no one else will care about it either. But, hey, for those of you commenters looking for an afternoon creativity stretch: it probably isn’t getting any better than this.
