As the Post’s Mike DeBonis reported last night, some Twitter users predictably took to the social networking service to criticize the District’s response to the storm that hit the city overnight. Most prominent amongst the complainers may have been ABC’s Jake Tapper, who not only wondered where all the plows were but also pondered recruiting Newark Mayor Cory Booker to help D.C. deal with the cleanup efforts.
This morning, Booker, who is something of a super-mayor, came to the District’s defense, tweeting in response to a District resident, “Thanks 4 kind words but don’t knock DC, [Newark] is still clearing too.”
Obviously, this isn’t the first time that national figures have criticized the District’s ability to handle snow. Last year, NBC’s Chris Matthews hosted an entire segment where he lambasted Mayor Adrian Fenty’s response to the biggest storm to hit the city in decades.
It’s nice to have Booker say a few kind words about the District, because maybe — just maybe — it’ll make those who reflexively complain that eight inches of snow that starts falling during rush hour can’t be cleared away in 30 minutes. All told, the District government’s response to yesterday’s snow was no better, nor was it any worse, than surrounding jurisdictions. Tapper may have complained about not seeing any plows in the city, but wouldn’t have seen them in parts of Virginia and Maryland, either. Hell, Tapper would have been stuck in eight hours of traffic if he lived out there.
