But now we can add another story to that sad list: the release of one of the team’s longest-tenured players, running back Clinton Portis.
It was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter over the weekend that the 30-year-old Portis would likely be released by the team, so this isn’t particularly shocking — after all, Portis would have been owed $8 million if the Redskins kept him on next year, a boatload for an injury prone, relatively old tailback. This morning, during Mike Wise’s show on 106.7 The Fan, Portis said that he “should be released today,” despite the Redskins’ offer to restructure his contract.
“I talked to Mr. Snyder,” Portis said. “It was an emotional situation. … I dont think it’s a money situation. It’s more the expansion growth of a person. The expectations are hard to accept not being the go to guy.”
In seven years with the team, Portis rushed for 6,824 yards and 46 touchdowns — last season, however, a number of injuries limited Portis to only five games before he was placed on injured reserve.
So long and thanks for all the characters, Mr. Portis.
