>> In her lifetime, Hildreth Meière was considered the most famous, distinguished, and prolific Art Deco muralist in the country. This month, the National Building Museum opens the first major retrospective of her work in Walls Speak: The Narrative Art of Hildreth Meière. On view will be Ms. Meière’s sketches, studies in gouache, full-scale cartoons and models which represent 25 of her most important commissions. Opening March 19.

>> Best known for his abstract mobiles and stabiles, Alexander Calder was also a prolific portraitist. Calder’s Portraits: A New Language features Calder’s three-dimensional works as a portraitist alongside contemporary documents and poses questions regarding the line between fine-art portraiture and caricature. Opening at the National Portrait Gallery March 11.

>> The Renwick opens History in the Making: Renwick Craft Invitational 2011 this month. This biennial exhibition series honors the creativity and talent of craft artists working today. The exhibit showcases the work of ceramic artist Cliff Lee, furnituremaker Matthias Pliessnig, glass artist Judith Schaechter and silversmith Ubaldo Vitali, who are creating contemporary crafts with function and aesthetic in mind. March 25.
