Photo by Matt.Dunn.Good morning, Washington. The Maryland House of Delegates’ Judiciary Committee was scheduled to take up a vote on a measure legalizing gay marriage in the state yesterday. But the vote was held up, after two legislators pulled out to make a power play. Delegates Jill Carter (D-Baltimore) and Tiffany Alston (D-Prince George’s), both co-sponsors of the bill, are leveraging their support for the legislation to angle for more money for public schools in their jurisdictions. (Alston, however, released a statement late last night indicating that she is ready to cast her “yea” vote on the bill.) It is quite possible that a hiccup in the Judiciary Committee could lead to the bill’s failure.
Biddle Gets Labor Endorsement: The Service Employees International Union will reportedly endorse Interim D.C. Councilmember Sekou Biddle this morning. It sounds like a big get for the Interim Councilmember, especially considering that his endorsements from Council Chair Kwame Brown and Mayor Vince Gray have lost a bit of luster over the last couple of weeks. But upon further inspection, SEIU does have a tendency to stick with the incumbents when it comes to Council elections, — the news also raises questions about how thorough SEIU really was in making their endorsement. After all, we’re not even sure how many candidates will be on the ballot at this point.
Metro’s Tough Week Continues: A week in which video of the L’Enfant Plaza escalator collapse is popping up all over the place and a man was beaten at the Suitland Metro station just got even worse for Metro: a teenager was stabbed late Tuesday while riding a W6 Metrobus. The teenager, attacked as the bus drove along the 2200 block of Pomeroy Road SE, is expected to survive. In response to the recent news of higher crime on Metro, the Guardian Angels have once again stepped up patrols in and around Metrorail stations.
Chat Line Killer Convicted: 21-year-old Antwon Holcomb was convicted on first degree murder charges yesterday after shooting and killing 29-year-old Anthony Perkins during a robbery attempt at 500 Lebaum Street SE in December 2009. The Post’s Keith L. Alexander has more on the heinous nature of Holcomb’s crime, which involved calling into a gay chat line and luring Perkins to a secluded area to rob him; Holcomb reportedly told detectives that he targeted gay chat lines to set up the robberies because they “were working professionals who wouldn’t report robberies for fear of disclosing their lifestyles.”
