Food trends, they seem to come and go. Some stick around way too long (cupcakes anyone?) Wild game isn’t exactly a new idea in cooking: venison, bison, you shoot it – you eat it. But here is a new and upcoming trend that seems to be a bit out there even for wild game: muskrat. Locally sourced of course.

Young and Hungry’s Michael Grass found out that Rocklands plans on serving the meat as a part of its Grills Gone Wild week. The restaurant will serve muskrat in a popper form and pair it with curried red pepper cream. Rocklands seems to be the only local restaurant serving the meat now, but DCist spies a new trend.

A meat that seems to have been relegated to roadside joints in the country, muskrat might become more upscale. Wikipedia tells me muskrat meat is occasionally consumed in Belgium and The Netherlands. It is also a traditional dish served on our very own Delmarva Peninsula.

So have you had muskrat? How do you like it prepared? Stewed, fried, barbecued?
