Courtesy Smithsonian Institution.Former professional baseballer Pedro Martinez is having a couple of busy days in Washington. Tomorrow, Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery will unveil a portrait of the Dominican star, who won the World Series in 2004 and made eight All-Star teams. Until then, Martinez will spend his time in town running a mini-clinic with — who else? — Mayor Vince Gray.
Gray, of course, is a pretty big baseball fan. (I’m sure there’s a “who’s your daddy?” joke about poll numbers in here somewhere!) The pair, along with Ward 4 Councilmember Muriel Bowser, will be at Maury Wills Field at 3 p.m., where Martinez will give some D.C. Public School baseball players some tips. Considering the caliber of pitchers that Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo is bringing in these days, it’d hardly be shocking if the Nats offered Martinez a contract after blowing a few past the kids at Maury Wills Field. (I’m joking. Kind of.)
