It’s March Madness season and the tinny ring of pep band music is in the air. This video of the George Mason University’s Green Machine pep band — not that other ill-fated Fenty green machine — covering Rage Against the Machine has been making the rounds recently.

Pep bands have been covering popular rock songs for sometime now, ever since they crawled out from under the crushing weight of Hot Cross Buns and Let’s Go Band. If you don’t recognize the songs, the WaPo’s Dan Steinberg notes that composition is a mash-up of Bulls on Parade and Killing in the Name — cover your child’s ears when the crowd sings along. But what makes this cover rock extra hard? Let’s break it down. Perhaps it’s Director Doc Nix throwing down lyrics on his podium, or the brass section head bobbing in unison, or probably the eye-catching flautist in red absolutely killing it. Thanks to DCist Heather for scouring the net for this gem.
