Photo by SweetJen34.Planning to hop in a cab inside the District today? Better bring an extra buck — D.C. cabbies will be tacking on an extra dollar in fuel surcharge to fares beginning today. Mayor Vince Gray issued an executive order to authorize the surcharge over the weekend, after the D.C. Taxicab Commission told Gray that the cost of gasoline was getting to be too high. The surcharge will be in place until July 25, unless repealed earlier by the Commission. (So, yeah, we’d go ahead and banking on it being in place until July 25.) The surcharge only applies to trips taken within the District — so, if you’re heading into Maryland and Virginia, be sure to keep an eye on the meter to make sure you’re not being overcharged. Of course, this is hardly the first time that cabs have asked the city government to allow them charge extra for gas money.
