Photo from the DCist tipline.UPDATE: According to D.C. Fire and EMS spokesperson Pete Piringer, the fire, which broke out around 10:30 a.m., was centralized in a cooling tower on the roof of the Franklin Tower. A bulk of the fire has now been knocked down. No injuries have been reported, but the building was evacuated. Firefighters are still investigating the scene, so you’ll still want to avoid the area.
ORIGINAL POST: D.C. Fire and EMS has responded to the scene of a fire at 1401 I Street NW. The fire is producing heavy smoke from the roof, and appears to be stemming from the Franklin Tower — however, the exact location of the fire has not yet been confirmed. One witness has told DCist that the immediate area smells like burning rubber. Obviously, the area has been swarmed with D.C. firefighters and emergency response vehicles, so you’ll want to avoid the area, if possible. We’ll update with more information when it becomes available.
Images of the smoke billowing around downtown have been making the rounds on Twitter. TBD has put together this Storify with more photos from the scene this morning:
