A public meeting will be held tonight to discuss the long-term future of the D.C. Circulator, including a potential fare hike and the extension and creation of new routes over the next couple of years. But the D.C. Department of Transportation has instituted some more immediate changes that will go into effect tomorrow, including the termination of service along the Smithsonian-National Gallery of Art route.

DDOT justified the cancellation by noting that the Smithsonian-National Gallery of Art route was really struggling to attract enough riders to justify its subsidy — less than 11 passengers an hour used the route in 2010. (The shutdown was proposed earlier this month, and DDOT discussed it with the public during a meeting on March 17.) DDOT plans to shift the resources used on the Smithsonian line to the Union Station-Navy Yard route (Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. until September 30) and will also increase hours on the Union Station-Navy Yard route during Nationals game days.

Also, Circulator stops along Water Street SW will be moved to Maine Avenue SW beginning tomorrow due to construction work on the Washington Kastles’ new stadium.
