Montgomery County fire and Rockville city police units responded to a report of a burning American flag in the parking lot of Mattie Stepanek Park at about 6:40 a.m. Saturday morning. According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, Fire & Explosives investigators found the still burning large flag, along with a unique brand of ignitable liquid.

There is no word as of yet on the motive behind the burnings, or whether it is related at all to the park’s namesake, Mattie Stephanek, who was a noted ambassador to the Muscular Dystrophy Association and had close ties to local and national fire departments.
