Team DCist is feeling mighty fine about the awesome artwork we left on the walls at Browne Education Campus as part of Saturday’s Servathon. An intrepid editor, writer, readers, and some friends we met along the way painted the logo of the Browne Bombers, as well as college logos on walls in the school. With the help of an overhead projector with transparency (remember those?), a pencil stencil, and the ability to paint within the lines, we transformed the large yellow wall into a colorful celebration of school spirit.
For someone with no artistic ability, it was pretty neat to see the work we were performing turn into a rendition that looked semi-professionally done. The logo for the Browne Bombers, a vintage military aircraft with a football for a nose, black with green highlights and white lettering, seems cut from the same graphic cloth as many modern sports designs these days — as we painted, we recalled our middle school years when our school mascots were some generic bird or wolverine. (Or nothing.) But regardless, students will pass it as they head down Stairwell #2 to the school’s gym and it is definitely worthy of slapping — Notre Dame “Play Like A Champion Today” style — every time they go by. At least, that’s how I imagine it being revered when Browne’s students return from Spring Break.
The event also raised over $125,000 for organizer Greater DC Cares, a group that works to connect volunteers with projects throughout the year. To date, Team DCist has kicked in $798 to that total. A big thanks to everyone that donated and came out to volunteer with us on Saturday and at Servathon projects throughout the city.
