British Sea Power will be at the Black Cat on Tuesday.MONDAY
He’s shared stages with DJ Jazzy Jeff and Jill Scott (and graduated from Howard University!) and now, Eric Roberson along with Vivian Green, is bringing the aptly named “Soul Survivors” tour to the Birchmere. $45, 7:30 p.m.
TUESDAY
Brighton’s British Sea Power has been performing sweeping, epic guitar rock for more than ten years. Yes, they’ve been eclipsed by some of the bands that they’ve clearly influenced, but their tight chemistry remains intact and will be on display at the Black Cat. A Classic Education opens. $15, 8:00 p.m.
>> Birchmere: Nanci Griffith (first of two nights), The Kennedys. $39.50, 7:30 p.m.
WEDNESDAY
It might be hard to dance to German/Parisian artist Pantha Du Prince when he comes to U Street Music Hall, but that’s due to the complexity of his compositions…and is certainly not a knock on his style. In fact, his mix of minimalist techno, shoegaze and Britpop (among other styles) should make for a very interesting night. $10 in advance / $12 at the door, 9:00 p.m.
We were glad to see John Davis put forth some consumable power pop treats in 2010 with the aptly-titled Title Tracks record, It Was Easy, but if their recent performance at St. Stephen’s Church (and their recent Daytrotter session) are any indication, their new tracks are about to make all other power-pop songs released this year look quite the fool. They’ll be celebrating the release of this new disc with the always excellent Foul Swoops at the Black Cat.
>> Coheed & Cambria. Sold out. 7:00 p.m.
THURSDAY
This Chicago band may have built their reputation on dissonant and repetitive music, but Maps & Atlases has become more accessible over time, though no less fun. They’ll be at Rock and Roll Hotel with Delicate Steve and Gypsyblood. $14, 8:30 p.m.
>> Jammin’ Java: Jimmy Gnecco. $20, 8:00 p.m.
Jukebox the Ghost return to the Black Cat on Saturday night.FRIDAY
One of the newer acts to grace the Black Cat stage at the Slumberland reunion show, The Crystal Stilts will return to that venue with some new songs in tow. Guaranteed to be fuzzy, filled with reverb and generally excellent. Chances of singer looking at the audience during songs: slim to none. German Measles will open and the We Fought The Big One DJs will perform a special set. $10 in advance / $12 at the door, 8:30 p.m.
>> Rock and Roll Hotel: Grails, James Blackshaw. $10 in advance / $12 day of show. 10:00 p.m.
>> Iron & Wine, The Low Anthem. Sold out, 7:00 p.m.
SATURDAY
One of D.C.’s best-loved exports in recent memory, Jukebox the Ghost, is coming home to the Black Cat. In their short lifespan, the piano-led power pop trio have already created many memorable moments in that room: selling it out before the release of their first album, releasing balloons onto the crowd and covering The Clash with Travis Morrison. While we’re not sure what tonight’s show with Wakey! Wakey! and Pretty & Nice will hold, their always theatrical presence will surely carry the day.
>> Red Palace: The Pipettes, Olivia Mancini. $14, 9:30 p.m.
SUNDAY
Puerto Rico’s Davila 666 exists as further proof that music can transcend the boundaries of language. This gritty garage-rock act has already made their way into the Red Room jukebox and they’ll be bringing their dynamic live show to the Backstage of the Black Cat.
>> Rock and Roll Hotel: Local H, The Dig. $12 in advance / $15 day of show, 8:30 p.m.
>> The Kills, Cold Cave, Entrance Band. Sold out. 7:00 p.m.
