Good morning, Washington. Last night, D.C. Councilmember Mary Cheh was arrested along with several other women during a voting rights protest focused on the passage of H.R. 3, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act. The demonstration, organized by DC Vote, saw Cheh and several others step onto Constitution Avenue, blocking access to the Russell Senate Office Building. (Councilmembers Yvette Alexander and Muriel Bowser were in attendance, but were not arrested — Alexander reportedly missed the chance because she had to use the bathroom.)

“I am proud to join the people today and my colleagues on the Council who were arrested last month in standing up for Home Rule and against Congressional meddling in the District budget,” said Cheh in a statement released last night. “We must do everything we can at this critical juncture to oppose H.R. 3 and support the Budget Autonomy Act Delegate Norton has introduced.” The bill, which passed the house 251-175 with minimal Democratic support, doesn’t appear to have much chance of getting out of the Senate, and the White House has already threatened to veto the measure should it do so. Cheh was released from Capitol Police headquarters around 11 p.m. More demonstrations are expected today, as 18 people previously arrested for similar civil disobedience make their court appearances. Our Martin Austermuhle has been tweeting updates from a rally outside the courthouse this morning.

Time To Put The BB Guns Away, Folks: Last night, D.C. police dealt with a man who was carrying a “realistic-looking” BB gun at the intersection of 11th and Park Road NW in Columbia Heights. The situation sounds eerily similar to one which resulted in police shooting and killing a man on Elvans Road SE last week. According to witnesses, customers were stuck inside nearby Meridian Pint for about an hour while the cops investigated. (Though I have to admit: one can think of worse places to be quarantined while the police do their thing.)

From Hockey Sticks To Pitching Wedges: So much for a miracle — last night, the Tampa Bay Lightning handled their business, sending the Washington Capitals to the golf course for the summer. It’s another year of playoff disappointment for the team, who just couldn’t catch a break during the four-game semifinal series and looked flatter than the Lightning. (We can’t imagine the mood in the owner’s suite was too pleasant last night.) For the truly masochistic, Japers Rink has a definitive roll call of stories related to the Caps’ elimination. Hey, the spotlight’s all yours, Washington Nationals.

Briefly Noted: Shooting closes Baltimore-Washington Parkway north of the Beltway…Man stabbed to death on 2300 block of Ainger Place SE …It’s not every day that a 101-foot yacht drops anchor in Southwest…At least there’s only one “One City” option…Rob Pitingolo maps the location of every alley in the District…Cap’n Crunch, we hardly knew ye.

This Day in DCist: Last year, D.C. got its first look at the city’s new streetcars, a woman filed suit against MTV for her depiction on The Real World D.C. and several members of the D.C. Council donned capes.
