Josh Wolff celebrates scoring United’s opening goal in the 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders.

After a pair of demoralizing losses in league play, including the club’s worst home loss in years, D.C. United rebounded with an invigorating 2-1 victory over Seattle last night. Charlie Davies, Josh Wolff and Andy Najar anchored an impressive offensive performance, while Bill Hamid made several key saves to earn the club its first MLS points since mid-April.

The victory was made all the sweeter, considering that Seattle supporters among the 11,254 at RFK Stadium had brought a sign reading “So this is what a non-soldout game looks like?” Seattle had won six straight games at RFK Stadium.

Najar was the positive force which pressed United forward on both tallies. Both goals were similar plays — Najar sending well-weighted through balls to Wolff and Davies, who then provided one another with nicely squared passes that led to competent, calm finishes to beat Sounders keeper Kasey Keller (who had never lost a match at RFK). The final scoreline was slightly unfair to Hamid, who was helpless to save Brad Evans’ 70th minute penalty, but otherwise was impressive, most notably on saves in the next six minutes that denied Alvaro Fernandez’s header and a sent wicked hit by Fredy Montero over the crossbar.

Ben Olsen chose youth — four United starters were younger than 20 — especially in his back line. And while the strategy produced some nervy moments, it eventually paid off.

“We were, I think, pretty charged up and we knew what was at stake,” Olsen said. “It wasn’t dire that we had these three points, but it was pretty important for where we’re at and where we were at mentally this week.”
