Just days removed from the surprising retirement of long-tenured coach Gary Williams, the University of Maryland has hired Mark Turgeon of Texas A&M as the Terrapins new head coach, reports FOX Sports.

Turgeon, who is 46, was 97-40 at his four years in College Station, and reached the NCAA Tournament every season. The Aggies averaged 24 wins per year under his watch. Before Turgeon was at Texas A&M, he led Wichita State to the Sweet 16 and a first place finish in the Missouri Valley Conference in 2006, earning MVC Coach of the Year honors. He was named Big 12 Coach of the Year by the Dallas Morning News in 2010 and 2011 for his work with the Aggies.

Maryland’s initial target was Arizona head coach Sean Miller. Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson met with Miller last weekend in Las Vegas during a coaches clinic after Miller expressed interest in the job. Miller instead signed an extension with Arizona, keeping him in Tucson for the foreseeable future. Other candidates who passed on the the Maryland vacancy include Pittsburgh head coach Jamie Dixon, Villanova head coach Jay Wright, and Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey.

Turgeon will have some work to do — he inherits a Maryland program that went 19-14 overall and 7-9 in the ACC last season and is losing its star player, Jordan Williams, to the NBA. Last year, the Terrapins were not invited to a postseason tournament for the first time since 1993.
