People who have to spend some time at one of the District’s Department of Motor Vehicle centers can save time by checking the agency’s website, which provides live webcam images of how busy each location is. But what happens when the DMV gets raptured?

The above image is a screenshot that was taken moments ago at the Brentwood center’s webcam page. Note the timestamp — exactly 6 p.m. on Saturday evening. (Thanks to reader Ben Detofsky for being the first to point this out.) Screenshots from Georgetown, Penn Branch and Southwest show similarly empty waiting areas, albeit with timestamps at about 30 minutes after the supposed Rapture was to take place. This has to be a joke of some kind — after all, each station closes at 4 p.m. on Saturdays, not to mention that the image is supposed to refresh every every 15 or 30 seconds.

Of course, D.C. government agencies weren’t (initially) shy about getting in on the Rapture meme. (And, hey, who doesn’t like a government agency who knows how to have a little bit of fun?) We’ve dropped a line into the DMV to check and see if they were having a little Rapture fun or if someone just played a prank on them — and we’ll certainly update when we find out. Until then, just enjoy one of the rarest sights you’ll ever see: a completely empty DMV.
