Beer: Flying Dog Coffee Imperial Stout (on nitrogen)
Why you should drink it: This limited edition pour is a rich, roasty stout that has been cold-pressed through coffee beans from Black Dog coffee in West Virginia after primary fermentation to create an iced-coffee type drink to enjoy during this brutal D.C. heat wave. It is also carbonated with nitrogen (think the silky qualities of Guinness) for added mouthfeel.
If you’ve seen some of the labels from Maryland’s own Flying Dog Brewery, you know their artwork is not like any other bottles out there. The brewery uses the artwork of illustrator Ralph Steadman, who may be most well-known for his collaborations with Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, to create a branding that is both brash and appealing.
Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe will be hosting Flying Dog CEO Jim Caruso to talk about some of the “lore behind the labels.” Not only does Flying Dog try to use the spirit Steadman and Thompson in their branding, but the the brewery considers Thompson and Steadman to be the “Gonzo Godfathers” of the overall mindset of the company. With this in mind, Caruso will no doubt have plenty to say about these iconic figures and how it relates to beer. Also, Anita Thompson, Thompson’s widow, will be on hand to to discuss and autograph her book, The Gonzo Way: A Celebration of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson and Ancient Gonzo Wisdom: Interviews With Hunter S. Thompson, which she edited.

Walk the plank
Bier Baron will be debuting Heavy Seas Plank 1 Ale tonight. This unique beer adds woody notes to the beer through a revolutionary process that incorporates a thermal process which releases compounds in the wood through controlled heat. The beer is also stored on wood during secondary fermentation, which allows many of the characters from the wood to blend into the beer. This is sure to be a delicious experience that also includes glassware and t-shirt giveaways.
