After a commercial tour bus flipped over on Interstate 95 in Virginia yesterday morning, killing four people and injuring dozens more, WAMU decided that they’d take a trip down to Chinatown to ask about safety on the buses which operate from there. The result is hardly assuring.
G. Williams runs his own tour bus company out of Gallery Place in Northwest D.C.
“Some don’t know DOT rules and regulations. They just get a guy, stick him in there and let him drive,” says Williams. “If DOT pulled these drivers, they would see half of them are in violation.”
Oh, goody.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating what caused yesterday’s accident. Authorities have theorized that driver fatigue may have been to blame, and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has suspended the license of the motorcoach’s operator, Sky Express, for “multiple violations in the areas of driver qualification requirements, drug and alcohol compliance, hours-of-service and vehicle maintenance.”
