Councilmember Jack Evans, a member of the Council’s subcommittee on redistricting, has had a tough couple of weeks. Evans has taken quite a bit of fire for his work on the committee alongside At-Large Councilmembers Phil Mendelson and Michael Brown, including claims from critics and Councilmember Tommy Wells that he gerrymandered the new boundaries of his own ward in the draft plan in order to rid it of “any area that isn’t lily white and filthy rich.”

But according to Evans himself, reactions like that and the ones aired at an hours-long public hearing on Wednesday night just might have worked — today on The Kojo Nnamdi Show, Evans said that the special committee was “not finished” with its plan.

“I’m not sure what changes we’re going to make,” admitted Evans. “We’re looking at many of the suggestions that have been made and very well may make some changes…it’s not the final plan yet.”

Of course, when asked about Ward 6 specifically — where most of the anger over the plan is centralized — Evans said that he didn’t want to “give anybody hope.” The Council’s final vote on the redistricting plan has not yet been scheduled.
