Photo by Kevin H.That’s right — it’s the first Friday in June, so it’s time to celebrate the donut (or doughnut, if you prefer). National Donut Day was actually created by, of all groups, the Salvation Army in 1938 as “a patriotic remembrance of the time in World War I when Salvation Army volunteers handed out doughnuts on the front lines to soldiers.” Of course, while we might not have any celebrations as cool as the Tour de Donut, you can at least celebrate the day with a free treat: both Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ Donuts are giving away free donuts all day today. (You’ll have to buy a beverage at Dunkin’ to get your free donut; the Kremes are totally free.)
