Savor Beer of the Day: Odell 90 Shilling Ale
Why you should drink it: In the current American craze of over the top double imperial barrel-aged, whatever-infused insanity, it’s really hard to find the quality beers that are meant to be enjoyed because of subtleties and nuances, and not for their taste bud-decimating qualities or double-digit ABV. They are certainly out there, but they often aren’t the ones getting the publicity.
So for today’s beer, I’d like to give some props to Odell’s 90 Schilling Ale, brewed in Colorado. She isn’t the stripper who is trying to drop your jaw with those luscious curves. She is the girl next door that you want to appreciate for her personality: classy, well-behaved, comfortable doing her own thing even when that isn’t what is cool right now. She’s a keeper if you just give her the chance, and has so much to offer once the novelty has passed. This beer has a mild hoppiness close to an English IPA, but the body of Scottish ale. Toasted malt favors of toffee and sweet fruity flavors that just sneak in are quickly met with some hop bitterness that creates a very balanced and easy-drinking beer. While many in this town love that other beer from Colorado, New Belgium Fat Tire, Odell’s 90 Schilling simply outclasses most beers in this range of flavors and should be tried for anyone who likes Fat Tire, but wants it turned to 11.
Churchkey will host the founders of Odell’s for a meet and greet Happy Hour from 4-7 p.m. today. 90 Schilling, as well as Myrcenary Double India Pale Ale, Cutthroat Porter, and their IPA will be on draft for tasting or full-size pours.
Small Pints
That’s the fact, Jack!
Adams Morgan’s newest addition, Jack Rose, will be hosting 2 Alaskan Brewing tastings which include the Summer Ale, IPA, Amber, Raspberry Wheat (Limited Release) and Smoked Porter, all paired with bites of fresh game from the roof deck smoke pit. Tastings are at 6 and 8 tonight, and reservations are required.
Bucket List
For those of you who got tickets to Savor, the guys at DCBeer.com made a well thought out “Don’t Miss” beer checklist of the top 25 beers to have during the festival. It is a great breakdown of some of the rare, not available in D.C., and best that American craft beer has to offer.
The Evolution will not be televised
Evolution Brewery out of Delaware will take over 12 of Big Hunt’s taps on Saturday to put on some of their finest beers. Not only will they be showcasing their delicious standards like Lot 3 IPA, but they will be treating us to some of their rare and most delicious brews. Menagerie #5 is one of the most beautiful beers I’ve had so far this year, and should not be missed by any bourbon stout fan — it’s appearance in D.C. is incredibly rare, and you may never see it again. And speaking of beers you might never see again, hometown brewers 3 Stars will have the only cask version of their Syndicate Saison on the bar, which will certainly be a tasty treat.
Don’t go Liz Lemon, there’s still the after after after after after party!
In case you may have forgotten to have a beer at Savor, Flying Dog is having an after party event at Iron Horse on Saturday night to wrap things up. Simply bring your ticket (or hard copy invitation) and receive a complimentary Flying Dog beer. Other craft beers will be available for purchase.
