Photo by Caitlin H. Faw.Good morning, Washington. Phew — what a day yesterday, huh? Between Sulaimon and his shades, Harry Thomas and his alleged misspending, and Anthony Weiner and…his weiner, it was one of the busier news days in recent memory. (To be honest, your editor is just happy that we didn’t have to report on the big technology news yesterday in addition to all of the above.) The news train will keep rolling today: a new draft of the city’s redistricting map was also released yesterday (of course), and the Council will meet this afternoon to discuss it, in addition to their regular Tuesday legislative matters.
Shots Fired at Hains Point: East Potomac Park continues to be closed to the public this morning after an incident last night involving a Park Police officer discharging his weapon. According to authorities, a Park Police officer came upon a man in possession of a handgun inside a car around 1:25 a.m. When the officer asked the man to drop the weapon, he refused, then got out of the vehicle, at which point the officer opened fire. The man who was shot was helicoptered to a local hospital, but is expected to survive.
Metro Needs Manpower: According to a report delivered to the transit agency’s board of directors, Metro needs an additional 345 positions to meet staffing demands, including 55 additional workers to maintain the system’s troubled escalators. Kytja Weir reports that most of the new jobs would be in non-public capacities — only one is in safety, for example. A proposed workforce of 11,319 would be the highest for WMATA since 2008; the agency is currently trying to bridge a $66 million deficit with increased subsidies from local governments.

This Day in DCist: Last year, Helen Thomas retired, Fenty got booed, and we learned that the city would be taken over by robots in disguise.
