>> The Smithsonian American Art Museum is getting funky this summer with its monthly Take 5! concert series, which will feature local groove acts one Thursday each month. This Thursday, the museum hosts saxophonist Wayne Sul and his band, Urban Funk. 5 p.m. Free.

>> A highly respected pianist and vocalist with thirteen albums under her belt, Karrin Allyson is the quintessential “musician’s musician.” She’ll lead her group through four nights of 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Blues Alley beginning on Thursday. $25 +$12.50 minimum/surcharge.

>> Local vocalist Lawrence Olds specializes in blues and jazz standards. He will lead a quartet through 8 and 10 p.m. sets on Thursday at Twins Jazz. $10 + $10 food/drink minimum.

>> Guitarist John Lee leads his burning trio on Friday at Jazz in the Garden. The set will feature saxophonist Matt Rippetoe as a special guest. 5 to 8:30 p.m. Free.

>> Saxophonist Arnold Sterling has been a prominent member of Baltimore’s jazz scene since the 1960s, and his credits include stints with legends like Jackie McLean, Jimmy McGriff and Sonny Stitt. Sterling will pay tribute to Stitt on Friday as he leads a group of excellent D.C. musicians at Jazz Night in Southwest. 6 to 9 p.m. $5.

>> HR-57 hosts regular Antonio Parker on Friday and Saturday. 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $12.

>> Pianist Alan Palmer is a seasoned veteran who has played with the likes of Jackie McLean, Roy Hargrove, Curtis Fuller and a host of others. He’ll be leading his band, New Soil, on Friday and Saturday at Bohemian Caverns. 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. sets. $15 in advance, $20 at the door.

>> Twins Jazz has programmed some excellent music for its Nordic Jazz Festival, which takes place Friday through Monday. The event presents groups from Iceland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Nightly 8 and 10 p.m. sets. $20 + $10 food/drink minimum. Visit the club’s web site for the full schedule.

>> Local afro-jazz-funk outfit The Funk Ark, led by keyboardist Will Rast, has just released its debut album, From the Rooftops, on ESL Records. Help the band celebrate as it performs this Sunday on the Millennium Stage. 6 p.m. Free.

>> Origem is one of D.C.’s best exemplars of Latin jazz. The band will be playing 8 and 10 p.m. sets on Sunday at Bohemian Caverns. $10 in advance, $15 at the door.

>> Bassist Matt Grason, whose jazz-meets-hip-hop group Motel was featured at DCist’s last Unbuckled show, leads his jazz-house band, House of Soul, on Sunday at the Velvet Lounge. The show marks the release of the group’s debut album, Let’s Move. 8 p.m. $10.

>> Michelle Webb is an excellent guitarist and oud player whose music blends African, Arabic and jazz influences. She will lead her band, King Kong, on Sunday at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge. 8:30 p.m. $5.

>> Blue Monday Blues hosts the Stacy Brooks Band. 6 to 9 p.m. $5.

>> Nearly three years have passed since we profiled The Flail, a talented group out of New York. The band will return to the area on Monday for 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Blues Alley. $20 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.

>> Ron Reid and Sunsteel is a steel pan-fronted band out of Boston that blends calypso and jazz. The Millennium Stage will present the group on Tuesday to celebrate National Caribbean Heritage Month. 6 p.m. Free.

>> Saxophonist Elijah Balbed just turned 21, but his talent belies his age. He is leading his own group at Bohemian Caverns every Tuesday for the month of June. 8 p.m. $7 in advance, $10 at the door.
