What’s going on in Ward 5? First, the ward’s Councilmember, Harry Thomas, Jr., was sued by the city for misusing hundreds of thousands of dollars in city funds. Now, one of the ward’s Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners is accused of inappropriately using $27,000 in city money.

WUSA9 reports that the D.C. Auditor and the Offices of the Inspector General and the Attorney General are investigating William Shelton, the Commissioner of single member district 5B01.

According to the auditor, an illegally obtained Wachovia Bank ATM card was issued to William Shelton, the chairman of ANC 5B. When we stopped by his Montana Avenue apartment Friday to find out about the missing money – he would not talk to us. He later called and said he would have a “complete explanation” on Monday.

Investigators allege $27,000 in cash was withdrawn from ATM’s over the course of the year. Payments were also made to a dozen vendors including, AT&T, Bloomingdales, Target, and Lexus. A source tells 9NEWS NOW Shelton used a portion of the money to pay the car note on his Lexus.

Seriously, what is it with the District’s elected officials and using money that isn’t theirs on luxury cars?

Shelton, who has served on the ANC for 14 years, didn’t show up at the Auditor’s office to turn over the ATM card as planned, so we’ll all just have to wait on this “complete explanation,” I guess. Just another banner day for political ethics in the District of Columbia, eh?
