This year was the 19th annual D.C. Caribbean Carnival parade.

Yesterday’s violence will undoubtedly tarnish the city’s memory of this year’s Caribbean Carnival. Mayor Vince Gray visited the crime scene, and one council member was incredulous that such an event could happen with so many police around. About 20 shots were fired and chaos ensued as innocent bystanders scrambled for cover. One man was fatally shot, and three other people were wounded.

Most stories about the festival today predictably chronicle Saturday’s brutal events, but before the day’s unfortunate shift, crowds of people came out on a summer day to celebrate culture, to revel in the flamboyant sway down Georgia Avenue, to indulge in good food, and, quite simply, to enjoy their friends and neighbors.
