>> The number of MPD officers arrested this year is an increase for D.C. police and is far more than surrounding police departments.

>> A man who was arrested on Thursday in the killing of an Army veteran in D.C. has escaped. James Brewer, 24, of Southeast D.C., is considered armed and dangerous.

>> A father saved his son from a man he allegedly saw trying to kidnap him at a Germantown Best Buy. The alleged kidnapper admitted that he was high on PCP at the time of the incident and claimed he thought the toddler was his own.

>> D.C. Police are investigating two overnight shootings. The first was in the Sursum Corda neighborhood of Northwest D.C at around 1:15 a.m. where a man was shot in the ankle. About an hour later, a man was shot in the leg in the 100 block of Patteron Street Northeast.

>> Michael Walters, 31, of D.C., was sentenced to 45 years in prison for killing Michael Henry, 25, in 2008. Walters, a former member of a violent drug ring, mistakenly thought Henry was an informant.

>> Police have released the surveillance video of the July 2 armed robbery of a Subway in Silver Spring. Anyone who has information about the robbery is asked to call Montgomery County Police at 240-773-5100. >> WAMU reports that federal officers say they’ve broken up an international drug ring that was smuggling heroin into the country through Dulles Airport from west Africa. Seven people were arrested. Two of the suspects live in Maryland, and one lives in in Virginia.

>> Circuit Court Judge Eric Johnson sentenced Nathanial Hart, 36, to 90 years in prison for the rape of Edith Nwosu, 20, at Montgomery College a year and a half ago. Nwosu allowed the media to use her name so that she can draw attention to what can happen to women even when they feel safe.

>> The trial date has been set for a Virginia woman charged with the murder of her 2-year-old son. Karen Murphy left the toddler in the back of a minivan when she went to work, apparently forgetting to drop him off at daycare.
