The incredibly hot weather is obviously not helping when it comes to fires in the city: in addition to two fires that broke out inside apartment buildings at the Watergate and along 16th Street NW last night, D.C. firefighters responded two more large blazes this morning. The first fire, located inside an auto repair shop at 1736 Rhode Island Avenue NE, caused severe damage and shut down traffic on the Avenue between 16th and 18th Streets NE. The second fire, reported inside a three-story apartment building at 1520 2nd Street SW, may displace some residents. Neither blaze caused any injuries, though emergency crews evaluated at least one person at 2nd Street and had to extinguish several cars which caught on fire inside the Rhode Island Avenue garage.
