One lucky Walmart manager now has his or her Dante Hicks moment.
Representatives from Walmart watchdogs Respect DC — along with members of the District Circus Marching Band and musicians Isaiah Toney, Vera Leone and Kristen Arant — descended on the Laurel, Maryland branch of the Big Blue Box to serenade customers and management with their own version of Aretha Franklin’s “Respect”.
Now, usually I’m not the biggest fan of the flashmob tactic — but even I have to admit that twisting the Queen of Soul’s lyrics into “we’re not gonna give you all our money / unless you give us some retirement honey” is kind of clever.
UPDATE: As you might imagine, Walmart wasn’t too thrilled with the demonstration.
“You know your message is falling on deaf ears when you have to rely on trombones instead of facts to get attention,” Walmart Director of Community Affairs Steve Restivo said in a statement.
“Real D.C. residents know that singing and dancing are not solutions for people who need access to quality jobs and affordable groceries. As we move forward on our planned stores in wards 4, 5, 6 and 7, we’ll continue to look for ways to better serve our customers in the city,” Restivo added.
