Rokey Suleman, who had served as the executive director of the District’s Board of Elections and Ethics since 2009, resigned today. In his tenure as Board director, Suleman presided over the contentious mayoral election of 2010, a cash-strapped special election in April of this year and the naming of a new board chairman, Togo D. West, Jr, as well as several reform efforts, such as the expansion of early and in-person absentee voting. Suleman was formerly the Fairfax County Registrar before taking the job at BOEE.
The Board has named Chief Technology Officer Paul E. Stenbjorn as interim director, and hopes to have a new leader in place by Labor Day. Of course, whoever takes over the post will have to deal with the fact that the city has still yet to appoint a third member of the board from a minority party.
