This morning, the District Department of Transportation announced the locations of 32 new Capital Bikeshare stations around the District of Columbia, the first major expansion since the program was launched in 2011. As part of the installation, an additional 265 bikes will supplement the current stock.
DDOT’s expansion plans were borne out of a lengthy community engagement process. (In addition to the input from residents, DDOT also considered “proximity to activity centers, proximity to high-demand existing stations, solar accessibility, and minimum space and surface requirements” when making the list.)
Some highlights? A station at the National Zoo, several new stations east of the Anacostia River, one in The Yards Park, a second along H Street NE, more docks in Petworth and more — a station in Fairfax Village was even installed today. There’s also plans to increase capacity at 18 high-volume stations around the city, including at 14th and V Streets NW, Dupont Circle and many more. Arlington will also expand with 30 additional stations this fall and next spring.
“With this expansion we will not only increase the overall reach of the system, but we will expand the program’s capacity by 22 percent in the downtown area, by 80 percent in our East of the River operations and by an average of 38 percent throughout each of the additional Wards,” said DDOT Director Terry Bellamy in a prepared statement.
DDOT says that a map of the new locations will be available soon — but until then, here’s the list of new and expanding stations. We’ll update with the map when it becomes available.
