The guy on the ground in the photograph above is James Dirk Crudup, a 41-year-old man who hopped over the fence around the White House last night. The Associated Press reports that Crudup was immediately apprehended by Secret Service agents, then transferred to D.C. police, who charged him with unlawful entry and contempt of court. Crudup was apparently under court order to stay away from the White House.

People that were checking out the President’s home and office yesterday when Crudup jumped the fence were quickly shuffled off the Pennsylvania Avenue side of the property as agents led Crudup across the North Lawn. (Now there’s a story for the tourists to bring back home with them.)

Of course, while it’s certainly not as common as, say, Congress toying with the nation’s financial future, people trying to jump the White House fence happens every now and then. There was even a blog — long dormant, sadly — dedicated to documenting such brazen attempts.
