The National Park Service put up the non-scalable fence due to safety concerns.
“It’s such a peaceful day. It really feels like things have started to turn around,” said one visitor to the newly opened Capitol grounds.
“This is a part of the fabric of our life in our neighborhood,” says D.C. Councilmember Charles Allen of the Capitol Hill campus, much of which is now behind an eight-foot-tall fence.
Pennsylvania Avenue and Lafayette Park are currently closed to pedestrians.
White House fence jumping season is apparently in full swing.
It isn’t related to the protests, according to the National Park Service.
Construction is slated to begin in 2018.
It would go from 7 feet tall to 11 feet and 7 inches.
According to CBS, the lockdown has been lifted. NBC4 reports that a man jumped the fence at 17th and G Streets NW.
