I briefly mentioned the news in this morning’s roundup, but the always-industrious Lydia DePillis put her nose to the grindstone and found a rendering of the skate park which will be erected on a parcel of the RFK Stadium concrete desert Festival Grounds. The park will be built to play host to the Maloof Money Cup, in which pro skaters will battle for, uh, money inside the brand new park, which aims to mimic Freedom Plaza:
Designed by Pro Skater Geoff Rowley and Joe Ciaglia’s team at California Skateparks, the 15,000-square-foot skate park is the first major skate park in Washington, D.C. and is inspired by Freedom Plaza and the architecture up and down Pennsylvania Avenue.
“It was important for us to take design elements from real DC skate spots and try to replicate them and hopefully complement them as much as possible,” said Rowley. “The local skaters will recognize some of these influences like the Freedom Plaza Ledges and the Golden Rail made famous by legendary locals like Pepe Martinez, Chris Hall and many more original DC rippers,” said Rowley.
Kudos to the design team for being able to pull inspiration from the incredibly staid Freedom Plaza. (And no disrespect to the skaters who made the Plaza the destination it is.) But, yeah, it’s kind of hard not to laugh about the rendering’s “Freedom Ledges.” Would you like fries with that design?
